Sea Kayak Instruction

We offer a variety of learning opportunities to paddlers through our own schedule of events and in cooperation with regional clubs and outfitters.  Please write or call for additional information..

Paddlers may also request proficiency assessments from level 1 to level 4 as well as a trip leaders assessment.. These assessments awards are a useful way to gauge your own progress and a paddle and are recognized widely by outfitter, clubs and fellow paddlers as  indicators of your expertise as a sea kayakers.

Level 1 Basic Strokes & Rescues- This one day class introduces paddlers to basic strokes and rescue. Paddlers will learn boat and paddle control, group paddling skills, and boat and gear design and function.

Basic Rolling- This class is for those student who are just starting to work on a roll or who need to work out the kinks in their existing roll. beginners will be taught a sweep roll , C to C, or another basic roll as a starting point.

Traditional Sea Kayaking- For intermediate paddlers who are interested in learning about traditional Greenland kayaking

Level 2 Strokes & Maneuvers Refinement- for paddlers who know the basics and are ready to fine tune their paddling skills. This class focuses on fine tuning your strokes and boat handling skill.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Level 3 Open water Sea Kayaking- For paddlers who have some experience and are looking to take the next step, this class introduces participants to the skills needed to advance towards open water paddling.

 
 
Level 4 Surf Zone Surf Zone course is a 7-8-hour course designed to help students learn to launch and land safely through waves up to 3 feet high in sea kayaks with bulk heads or flotation. Graduates of this course will be introduced to the nomenclature and personal experience of the surf zone, timing, and side-surfing techniques. (prerequisite required)
Level 4 Tidal Current Tidal Current course is a 7-8-hour course that focuses on estimating, reading, and maneuvering in currents up to 4 knots caused by tidal exchange around coastal contours in sea kayaks with bulk heads or flotation. Students will be introduced to the process of reading tide prediction charts, studying the water, and controlling the kayak in strong flow. (prerequisite required)
Level 4  Rough Water Maneuvering, Towing & Rescues Coastal Kayak Rough Water Maneuvering, Towing & Rescues is an eight-hour course focused on helping the student learn to handle a kayak of the type designated as a sea kayak with bulkheads or flotation in challenging conditions. Skills will include but not be limited to a variety of rescue techniques and towing, maneuvering the sea kayak in the wind. Graduates of this class may be capable of handling sea conditions including white caps, waves to three feet, and currents to 5 knots. (prerequisite required)
  Level 4 Advanced Surf Skills Coastal Kayak Advanced Surf Skills course is a 7-8-hour course designed to introduce the concepts of reading and surfing waves up to 4 feet high in sea kayaks with bulk heads or flotation or kayaks of the kind called whitewater or surf kayaks or even sit on tops with thigh straps. Students will be introduced to surf etiquette, wave selection, positioning and maneuvers in the surf. (Pre-requisite required)
Coastal Kayak Trip-Leading Skills Assessment This course is intended to provide the minimum skills and training necessary for an adult leader possessing basic paddling skills to lead a trip for participants with beginner level paddling skills, in gentle conditions. The emphasis of this course is trip leading, safety education and rescue, not paddling instruction. The content is relevant for clubs, camps, scouts and other entities providing trips. This is an Assessment Course with a written Examination. and award certificate for successful competition.
 

Private  Instruction- one on one or small group instruction is available for students of all levels. You can arrange to work on basics or advanced techniques by focusing on your specific interests or needs

 
 

Traditional Greenland Paddle Making - This 6 hour class teaches students to make a traditional Greenland paddle. Each participant will carve a paddle under direction of a mentor. We provide instruction, some tools and, paddle blanks. You provide the elbow grease and go home with a new Greenland paddle

 
 

ACA Instructor Certification- We offer instructor certification workshops in Coastal Kayaking at the Intro, Essentials, Basic, and open water level. Additionally we offer the ACA Traditional Skills Endorsement to qualified instructors.

 
 

Basic Navigation- Learn the basic skills you will need to read a chart, plan a trip and, navigate form the cockpit of your kayak.
